Job Summary:  
Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Certified Surgical Technologist works as a member of the operative team.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the physician in the sterile field during surgical procedures with efficiency, anticipating the needs of the physician and patient throughout the procedure.  
  • Gown and glove physicians and any assistants.  
  • Maintain a sterile field at all time. 
  • May perform surgical skin prep.  
  • Ensure instruments, supplies and equipment are readily available and in good working order. 
  • Receive medications onto the sterile back table from the circulator, labels medications appropriately.  
  • Disinfect, decontaminate, and sterilize instrumentation after the surgical procedure. 
  • Maintain sterilization logs; assure completeness and accuracy of documentation.  
  • Perform weekly biological monitoring of steam autoclave. 
  • Assist in preparing the operative suite by checking supplies, equipment and instrumentation.  
  • Clean the operating room between patients per policy.  
  • Initiate safe practices, and is knowledgeable about current center policies and procedures, as well as Indiana State Department of Health and CMS regulations. 
  • Maintain a friendly, positive and caring attitude with all patients, physicians, and staff. 
  • Take an active role on committees within the organization. 
  • Identify actual and potential risks to patients and others and take action to minimize or eliminate risk and maximize safety in the facility. 
  • Follow Universal Precautions at all times. 
  • Communicate with other health care team members to ensure continuity of care. 
  • Cooperates willingly and communicate effectively utilizing proper channels with team members.  
  • Restock supplies as necessary; assist with ordering and restocking of supplies.  
  • Assist with cleaning of stretchers in the PACU between patients as needed.  
  • Restock linen and supplies as needed.  
  • Transport discharged patients to their vehicles as necessary. 
  • May perform circulating duties in procedure/operating room when a qualified Registered Nurse is immediately available to respond to emergencies.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of experience working in an operating room is preferred.  
  • Current BLS certification. 
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and have an ability to work compatibly with all physicians and staff. Possess strong organizational skills and a clear understanding of the importance of efficiency and cost effectiveness in an outpatient surgery center. 
  • Certified Surgical Technologist must have the knowledge and clinical skills to perform the job duties within the operative setting. 
Education: 
  • Graduate of a Surgical Technologist program.  
  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist is required 
Working Conditions: 
General working conditions include working inside in an office or clinical setting with comfortable temperatures year-round. There may occasionally be exposure to blood and body fluids, and policies are in place for Universal Precautions identifying risks and appropriate barrier protection.  
 
Physical Requirements: 
Physical requirements may include the ability to stand/walk for up to eight (8) hours per day; bend, stoop, twist; assist patients in turning, rising from stretcher and recliners; assisting patients in and out of wheelchairs; assist with moving on and off the operating room table. Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds with assistance, and 50 pounds without assistance, and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
